Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has hinted at uncertainty regarding his future with both his club and the Netherlands national team following their Euro 2024 semi-final defeat against England.
Van Dijk witnessed his team concede a last-minute goal in Dortmund on Wednesday night, resulting in a 2-1 loss for the Netherlands.
As captain for both Liverpool and the Dutch national team, Van Dijk’s contract with Liverpool has only a year remaining.
When asked about his future after the defeat to England, Van Dijk told Reuters, “I haven’t the slightest idea right now.”
“I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player,” he added.
“Then we’ll go for it again, but first recover from this.
“After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over.”
During the 2023-24 Premier League season, Virgil Van Dijk was almost ever-present for Liverpool, featuring in all but two league games for which he was suspended.
In May, he commented that there was “no news” on his contract situation at the Merseyside club, which has recently appointed compatriot Arne Slot as their new head coach.
Van Dijk also played in all six of the Netherlands’ matches at Euro 2024, bringing his international appearance to 74.
