The incident occurred after Uruguay lost to Colombia in the Copa America semi-final.

After the final whistle at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, Darwin Nunez was captured on TV cameras climbing over railings and entering the stands where Colombia fans were located.

Reports from Uruguayan outlet El País indicated that disorder broke out near the section where friends and family of the Uruguay team were seated.

Nunez, who has not yet publicly commented on the incident, was seen confronting Colombia fans while others attempted to restrain him.

According to Uruguay captain José María Giménez, the players intervened to protect their families amid what he described as a chaotic situation in the crowd.

Giménez was quoted by Reuters as saying, “There was no police and we had to defend our families.

“This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don’t know how to drink.”

Following the altercation, Nunez was seen embracing his son on the pitch.

Conmebol, South American football’s governing body, strongly condemned the incident and announced plans to investigate, stating, “There is no place for intolerance and violence on or off the field.”

The brawl erupted after Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia, which dashed their hopes of reaching the Copa America final.

Earlier, tensions had flared on the pitch between players and coaching staff from both teams.

Nunez, who joined Liverpool from Benfica for an initial £64m in June 2022, started the match as Uruguay’s striker but failed to convert any of his four attempts on goal.

The 25-year-old may face a lengthy ban following a confrontation with supporters in the stands.

Colombia will now face Argentina in Monday’s final.
