beIN SPORTS presenter Richard Keys has disclosed that Xabi Alonso is poised to become the next manager of Liverpool, succeeding Jurgen Klopp in the summer.
Both Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen, where Alonso currently manages, are enjoying successful seasons in their respective leagues.
Liverpool currently hold the second position in the Premier League, tied on points but trailing slightly on goal difference, while Leverkusen are positioned well to challenge Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga.
Alonso has been heavily linked with the soon-to-be vacant managerial position at Anfield following Klopp’s announcement of his departure at the end of the season.
Fenway Sports Group, the owners of Liverpool, have already appointed Michael Edwards as the CEO of Football and Richard Hughes as the club’s next sporting director.
The final task for Edwards and Hughes is to identify the ideal successor to Klopp for the upcoming summer.
In his blog, Keys claimed that Alonso has agreed to take on the role of Liverpool manager, countering those who doubted his earlier suggestion that the Spaniard should be considered for the position as early as the end of 2023.
“Deschamps? Yes. Zidane? Yes. I was laughed out of court at the back end of last year when I said they should go and get Alonso – agree a deal with his ‘people’ and guarantee him five years to get it right,” he wrote.
“My critics said ‘No. what’s he done? It’s too soon’. Really? Well 3 months on it’s not too soon for Liverpool to have got him to agree to become their next manager.
“As I always say when I share news like this – these big deals can always go wrong.
“There’s a lot to go wrong when they’re blue riband, whether it’s a player or coach/manager involved, but my information is that Alonso has decided on Liverpool.
“If I’m a Liverpool fan – that excites me. What United have got to do is better that appointment. Would Southgate turning up at OT (Old Trafford) do that?”
